A new lawsuit has accused Pixar, Lucasfilm, Intuit, Adobe, Intel, Google, and Apple of conspiring to suppress and fix compensation of their employees. It was launched yesterday by Siddhart Hariharan, a former software engineer at Lucasfilm and it is focusing on the agreements of ‘no solicitation’ that companies in question have agreed between the year 2005 and 2009. It is claiming that the tech companies have violated the California antitrust statues but it isn’t seeking relief under U.S. Clayton Act of 1914 which is quite interesting. This assures that the case is dealing only with California law instead of the federal statues of antitrust.

These accusations might sound familiar and it is because Pixar, Intuit, Intel, Google, Adobe, and Apple settled with Department of Justice last year for an investigation in to the anti competitive solicitation agreements. This lawsuit says DoJ investigaton as wrongdoing evidence. A few companies including Google said that they would be ending the policies of ‘no cold call’.

There are mentions of different relationships and agreements between the companies. It is said that Lucasfilm and Pixar entered in to an agreement which was done to eliminate competition between them for the skilled labor. Pixar had originated from Lucasfilm division which Steve Jobs, the Apple CEO bought in 1986.

Consumer gadgets have been previously used by the medical practitioners before but now things are going to the next level through Drchrono. It is an iPad app which reduces the mess of papers. Drchrono is an electronic health record (EHR) app for Apple iPad. Doctors can complete their everyday tasks and also access information without using papers. The information that is accessed and gathered using the app can be seen on any Web browser, Android device or iPhone. This app can sync with Drchrono web-based healthcare platform.

Features of the app are made for improving the ways a doctor interacts with his patients. For instance, the app can be used by doctors for scheduling their appointments, paperless billing, writing e-prescriptions (this can be sent to any pharmacy in the U.S.), note taking, drug interaction tests, and medical speech-to-text transcription. Users can upload, lab results, X-rays and EKGs on the app for tagging and viewing them later.

Also, the makers of Drchrono say that this app can be used by physician in any exam room. As compared to this, a non-web app or web based computer software needs the physician to be in front of the computer.

The records get updated in real time and the makers of the app are adding new features constantly. The storage of data is HIPAA compliant. Doctors can use the app for free on 1 iPad but if you want to add more devices, you will have to pay subscription fee which ranges between $199 and $99 per month. There is also free online training included along with daily demos for the physicians who have any questions about this app or just want to learn any new features.

Mozilla Firefox 4 is finally out now and unlike the latest browser from Microsoft, it is compatible with Windows XP too. This will easily attract attention of people who haven’t upgraded yet to Windows 7 and want a browser that is more capable than the clunky and sluggish Microsoft Internet Explorer 8. Also, don’t mistake this for the earlier version of Mozilla Firefox 4 which was an open source Web browser.

The user interface on Mozilla Firefox 4 has been dramatically redesigned and this is a far cry from the design of the previous iterations. Also, it is a lot similar to Google Chrome. Tabs are now located above address bar and combined with the absence of menu bar, you get extra real estate to view the Web content. The menu in Mozilla Firefox 4 is styled on the lines of Windows Start menu and you will see most common menu commands with Bookmarks menu that are accessible from Bookmarks toolbar. You can also go back to a more traditional appearance with tabs and menu bar below address bar.

Tabbed browsing now has a makeover and there is a new intriguing feature called Tab Groups. You can manage multiple windows having multiple tabs from single visual overview without cluttering up the Task Bar and desktop with multiple windows. This is really useful if you are like tabbed browsing and if you juggle the tabs that are related to different projects and tasks. You can drag and drop the tabs between the groups and the groups can also be resized and named. For instance, the Tab groups which are more important will be bigger than the ones that are less important.

You can pin the individual tabs like Chrome so that they don’t get closed accidentally. This is really useful for Web applications like Google Docs that you might want all the time. If you type address of a site that is already open, Mozilla Firefox 4 will offer you to go to the tab directly without reloading a separate page.

Those who thought that Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is dead check this out. Microsoft released the latest version of their Internet browser and in the first twenty four hours, it was downloaded about 2.35 million times. Beta version was downloaded just one million times in the first day after it was released. For IE9 final version, there were 27 downloads every second or 98,000 downloads every hour. Internet Explorer senior director, Ryan Gavin, thanked everyone around the world for such enthusiastic reception on IE blog.

The numbers of IE9 aren’t really as impressive as compared to the other browsers. For instance, Mozilla Firefox 3.5 version was downloaded a million times within a few hours when it was released in 2009. Also, the earlier version, Mozilla Firefox 3.0 was downloaded eight million times within the first 24 hours of its release.

The new and updated version of Internet Explorer now comes with HTML5, do-not-track function which is built-in and the UI too has been improved. You can download it from BeautyoftheWeb.com. IE9 will be facing stiff competition from Mozilla Firefox. There will be new Firefox 4 version released on 22nd of March.

Djay, which is a groundbreaking app for Mac is now available on the iOS platform. It is from Algoriddim and there is also an update for the iPad version of the app. The cellular version is available on iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 and it turns your handset into a pair of mixing decks. Just load songs from the iTunes music library and you will be able to scratch, transition and sync between the songs like professional DJs. The content can also be recorded and you can then export it in AIFF high quality file.

Both the iPad and iPhone versions of this software are quite similar to the desktop version which costs $49.99. The mobile versions are available $9.99 which is significantly less expensive than the desktop one which is used by both amateur and professional DJs. This software has got rave reviews from a lot of sources.

An important feature that you won’t find on the iOS version is the ability to lock in song key. Match the song BPMs at different tempos and the track that you have queued up will either sound baritone or warbly. When Djay for Mac beat matches the tracks automatically, it does the job without changing the key of the either tune. It is a really magical feature and you can start a DJ party with it.

The head of the product development at Algoriddim, Frederik Seiffert said that the matching of key lock beat is almost impossible on iPhone and first gen- iPad due to hardware limitations. But they will be trying to do it on the iPad 2 if the new gadget doesn’t have such problems.

Headquarters of Algoriddim is in Munich, Germany and the iPad 2 won’t be available till the end of this month in the country. The company has still been working hard on the iPad version of the app. They have put in some upgrades and have also raised the fees to $20. The app can be named Djay 1.5 due the set of new features inside.

You can scratch the disk using a single finger instead of two and the app will make sure that the scratch lasts for precise beats number. Tapping a few fingers will make the app loop a single part of the track again and again. Again, the loop is precise according to the rhythm. The iPad 2 version is almost as good as the Mac version.

When I first saw the Nikon Camera Control Pro 2, I wasn’t really sure about it. I am into portraiture photography and have tried some similar applications like Canon’s Remote capture and Leaf Capture. The big advantage here that made me drool was that I could see the photos on my computer immediately. Also, I got the ability to verify 100% if the exposure, focus, lighting and composition were up to my expectations. This in turn meant great shots every time and I could ditch the bad ones immediately. Also, there won’t be any time wasted in post processing.

The Leaf and Canon application which I have previously used was pretty fast and this is really important. It would have been useless if I was shooting with my device tethered to my computer and the PC froze all of a sudden.

So I first downloaded the trial version of Nikon Camera Control Pro 2 and I was glad to see that it ran pretty fast. The previews popped up on the screen in no time even when I was shooting the TIF files on D300 which can be as big as 35 MB. Performance on my laptop too was equally fast; the graphics power wasn’t as good as that of the PC but that is purely a computer hardware problem.

When you are using Nikon Camera Control Pro 2 with camera tethered to a laptop or PC, you will have to handle three windows at a time. You get a preview window which can be resized for showing the pictures fast. You can configure it with different magnifications, filmstrip or single frame view. A smaller, second window on the Nikon Camera Control Pro 2 app will show you the download status and histogram for the files when they come in.

Third window here is the control window for the camera which lets you trigger remotely and also give you access to all the menus and settings on the camera. If you are having Nikon D300 or D3, there is a Live View on display which you can work on with both tripod and handheld modes. I found the Live View very useful here; previously I used to think that it is an over hyped and useless feature. I have purchased this software now and I am pretty glad about the investment.

Bonecruncher Soccer is a game quite similar to the popular Backbreaker Football; the 3D gameplay mechanic in both the games have a lot in common but with the soccer game, you have to dribble the ball down the field and then score goals by flicking your finger. The players are directed by using tilt controls, just like BackBreaker football. However, instead of the onscreen buttons for dodges and moves, you have to swipe the finger on the display for the special moves. Each of them is described when you start playing the game. Once you have dodged and dribbled your own way downfield, the game play freezes and it lets you flick the ball in to the goal. Some of the levels have targets through which you can earn bonus points and hence controlled flicks are really necessary in this game.

Bonecruncher Soccer is a really good game overall but it doesn’t have the polish of the more-refined and older Backbreaker franchise. Different developers have made this game but I hope Bonecruncher Soccer provides updates soon for smoothing out the control system and graphics. These updates will make it better, just like BackBreaker Football. The swipe controls are good for gaming but you need to be very precise on some occasions. For instance, during the spin-move dodge, you have to do it at the right time or you’ll get caught in the middle of the spin. I had to practice it for sometime and I avoided those moves because they needed a lot of concentration.

There are some issues about control but overall, I found the Bonecruncher Soccer both challenging and fun. There are a lot of options for clothing customization which means your favorite player can be recreated with the number and uniform. If you are a fan of soccer and are looking for a cool pick-up-and-play game, get Bonecruncher Soccer now.

FrostWire is p2p (peer-to-peer) open source client which is based on Gnutella network. It is built heavily on the LimeWire application which was widely popular at one time. This project started in the year 2005 when LimeWire’s director announced that they had made a code through which users would be blocked from downloading copyrighted content.

This code is derived from LimeWire Pro which is a paid version of the client but I bet none of you know about the paid version because everyone is using the free one. FrostWire interface hasn’t changed much apart from a few basic color changes. There are tabs having rounded corners and also connections which monitor the incoming and outgoing connections by the host name. Apart from that, it gives you the details of the bandwidth connection and version and vendor that are currently in use. Another cool addition is the chat feature which is now built in to FrostWire.

So you see, apart from the basics, both LimeWire and FrostWire have a lot in common which isn’t surprising since both of them come from the same stable. These two applications are written in Java and offer support for a lot of platforms. FrostWire has one advantage over the other one; there are no advertisements bombarding you all the time.

I am not saying that FrostWire is perfect though. For instance, during my tests, the media player which was built-in failed to play MPGs or MP3 and this problem wasn’t seen in LimeWire or other programs. There is also something called ASK toolbar which has to be installed separately; it cannot be done while the main application is being installed.

I won’t recommend downloading FrostWire if you already use LimeWire. However, if your ISP or Internet Service Provider is filtering and controlling the content and if you are having a tough time with LimeWire for getting around it, FrostWire could be the solution that you’ve been looking for. There are very few ISPs right now that are familiar with FrostWire.

I am a huge fan of Netflix and have been looking for something on the internet for managing my Netflix queue. Netflix doesn’t have their own native application so if you wish to do this on the iPhone, it can be done only through a third party app. I have tried a lot of apps out there but the MovieFlick is the best for managing Netflix queue. I must also admit that all Netflix queue managers come with their own set of drawbacks and not all of them are perfect. Each one has its own pros and cons. Typically speaking, a Netflix app needs to have few things that I will be using all the time. These things need to be there even before I start consider getting it.

Firstly, the search has to be fast and good. The previews of movie are pretty quick so I should be able to find the movie fast and then add it to the queue. The app should also have a user-friendly interface. The regular queue should be separated from the ‘saved queue’ for movies that are not yet out on the disc yet. I should also be able to see what is there on TiVo HD’s ‘Instant’ streaming. The Netflix queue manager should have the capability of letting me rearrange my movies and see the ratings too. Finally, it should tell me if the movie is available on DVD or Blu-ray.

MovieFlick is clean and lets you see what is in the queue. It shows you if the content is in Blu-ray or DVD and also the rating, run-time and the year in which it was introduced. I spent most of the time in the ‘Saved queue’, it does a good job of separating the content from main queue but it is located on the bottom of the main queue which was very big in my case. So it was a bit monotonous to scroll loads for getting to it.

To sum it up, I would say that MovieFlick Netflix queue manager comes with some drawbacks but it still better than a lot of queue managers out there. One thing that I would like to see here is a separate tab for the Saved queue or a separate button which would directly get me there. I say this because my regular queue is pretty long and it takes a lot of scrolls for getting to the saved queue. The app will handle multiple account but there is no support for Netflix sub-accounts (they are the ones allotted to your family members for managing their queues separately). I am yet to see an app which can do this. If Netflix make an app on their own, this is possible but until that happens, I am going to use Netflix.
