Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX – great features marred by the big price

Sum and Substance:
Thumbs Up:

Darkfield technology for use on any surface, unifying receiver, can run even on a single AA battery, power button to save battery life.

Thumbs Down:

Expensive.

Inside the Trunk:

Carrying pouch.

The Whiz Kid Speaks:

Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX is a laser wireless USB mouse 2.4 GHz interface, interfaces on the device include 1 X USB 4 pin. The mouse is compatible with Windows 7, Microsoft Windows Vista / XP and Apple MacOS X 10.4 or later. Also bundled with the mouse are utilities and drivers.

Logitech gives a warranty for the Anywhere Mouse MX for a period of three years.

Razzle Dazzle:

Speaking of looks, the mouse has nothing out of the box. It has a typical all black design but certainly doesn’t look boring. We were impressed with the ergonomics that the Logitech’s Anywhere Mouse MX had to offer, it will go quite well with a left and a right handed user.

Inside Dope:

Logitech’s Anywhere Mouse MX contains Darkfield laser technology which is the manufacturers answer to Microsoft’s BlueTrack laser tracking system. The Darkfield can work on all surfaces even on nonmirrored glass, something that BlueTrack cannot do. MX also has the Logitech’s new unifying technology, a great feature if you are a fan of Logitech’s products and don’t use anything else. It can connect up to six compatible mice and keyboard to a single USB receiver, thus you keep your USB ports free. However, Logitech has slapped an $80 price tag on it. Microsoft’s Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000 costs about $40 and has similar features, so why would you spend twice on this mouse?

Logitech anywhere mouse mx review

The small size of the Logitech’s Anywhere Mouse MX makes it travel friendly; it will fit easily in to your laptop bag. The shape of the pointer is sculpted in such a way, that it can be used by a left hander and a right hander with equal comfort. However, the two buttons on the left side of the mouse will be useless when used by a left hander. The mouse feels great in the hands, with textured coating on the surface and it is also great to move around.

The scroll wheel in the middle of the pointer moves up and down as well as side to side. You can change the movement of the wheel from smooth scrolling to ratcheted movements. SetPoint 4.8 application lets you program all the buttons on the mouse.

Below the mouse there is the power switch and Darkfield tracking unit. The power switch is used to save battery life when the device is not in use. We tested the mouse on various surfaces like denim jeans, carpet, mirrored glass and other surfaces which are irregular and are seldom used for mice. We were quite impressed with the Darkfield technology; it lived up to its promise and ran on almost anything with no change in speed or accuracy during use.

The device is powered by 2 AA batteries and you will be surprised to find that the pointer will work on a single battery too. This feature has been incorporated by Logitech incase you don’t have two batteries or run out of battery power. The mouse won’t work with rechargeable batteries but Logitech says standard alkaline batteries will have enough juice to power the mouse for 15 months because of its smart sleep mode which automatically reduces the power consumption if the pointer is not used for a long time.

The finally the Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX sports the new unifying technology. You can connect six wireless peripherals to a single USB device and thus save on USB ports. This is not all; you get a USB device with every product. So you can put USB device at home, other one in your office and then use Logitech products at both the places without wasting time reconfiguring. The receiver for the USB wireless device is located on the bottom of the mouse.

Logitech doesn’t come with any bundled third party software. However, there is SetPoint software for Mac and Windows which is used to program the button on the pointer.

Nitty Gritty:

Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX two main selling points are the glass-tracking Darkfield laser and multiconnective Unifying receiver. However, a price tag of $80 seems too much for these two features, we would recommend you to get Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000 by Microsoft for $40.

I would prefer the cheaper one only. I can buy two instead of buying this one.
