HP ProBook 5310m – Matte display

thumbnail
HP ProBook 5310m come enclosed in magnesium alloy base and aluminum brushed chassis so that it can survive the daily commute rigors. The weight of this machine is 1.72 KG and at 23.5mm thin design, this laptop is slimmer and lighter as compared to the consumer version – Pavilion dm3. The ProBook has chiclet buttons and this is because they are in fashion right now. But the area between the buttons is made up of glossy plastic and it is a fingerprint magnet. For the keyboard, the manufacturer has put in rubberized texture; whether this is good or bad is purely up to you. The touch pad supports multitouch gestures. HP ProBook 5310m has sleek and clean looks and there are just three shortcut buttons. They are for activating wireless radios, QuickLook 3 and HP QuickWeb functions. HP ProBook 5310m laptop doesn’t have an optical drive but there is external DVD burner option included in the configuration. I was given the optical drive too with my review  [...]

Bonecruncher Soccer – Challenging and fun

thumbnail
Bonecruncher Soccer is a game quite similar to the popular Backbreaker Football; the 3D gameplay mechanic in both the games have a lot in common but with the soccer game, you have to dribble the ball down the field and then score goals by flicking your finger. The players are directed by using tilt controls, just like BackBreaker football. However, instead of the onscreen buttons for dodges and moves, you have to swipe the finger on the display for the special moves. Each of them is described when you start playing the game. Once you have dodged and dribbled your own way downfield, the game play freezes and it lets you flick the ball in to the goal. Some of the levels have targets through which you can earn bonus points and hence controlled flicks are really necessary in this game. Bonecruncher Soccer is a really good game overall but it doesn’t have the polish of the more-refined and older Backbreaker franchise. Different developers  [...]

Sony KDL-32L5000 – Good quality remote

thumbnail
Sony KDL-32L5000 is a 32 inch sibling of Sony’s L500 series of TVs. There is also a 37 inch and 26 inch member in this series and this review applies to all three of them. There is not much difference in the 3 panels except for the size of the screen. Sony KDL-32L5000 is the very inexpensive TV as compared to other products in Sony’s repertoire. The styling on this TV is really impressive. It is hard to find such quality in this price range. The best part about the aesthetics is the bezel around the edges. It is equal on all the sides and this bezel gives the TV a picture frame kinda look. There is beveling too which adds to the beauty quotient. This panel has a glossy stand which matches the color of the TV but it doesn’t swivel. The design of Sony KDL-32L5000 is really nice and it is extended to the remote as well. This clicker is a lot better than others in this price. The menu system has a few features and you get six different choices for adjusting the color  [...]

Samsung L170 – Phone with a chrome finish

thumbnail
Samsung L170 is a candy bar phone having small screen and a very curious keypad which is a bit hard to press. However, you will get used to it after some time. This phone is chromed and it looks aesthetically appealing. The chrome body gives it a shiny and nice look but such surfaces can easily attract a lot of fingerprints and this might not go well with hygiene freaks. The shell is chromed and it looks metallic and this is what gives the handset the heavy feel. On the back of the Samsung L170, there is camera. The shutter button for this is located on the right side along with a toggle button. On the left, there is a camera shutter button and the headset port. This is where you have to plug in the headset or charger. The keys of this phone are white and black along with white color backlight. I liked the ridged effect, it is curious and I haven’t seen this before on any other phone. Numbered part of each of the button and alphabetical part of this same button is  [...]

Canon PowerShot G12 – A lot of similarities with its predecessor

thumbnail
Canon PowerShot G12 is quite similar to G11, its predecessor but the manufacturer has put in a few updates here like 720/24p video capture which was really needed and there is also miniHDMI and stereo audio. Just like S95, this camera has HDR scene mode which combines 3 shots. For this, you need to keep the tripod steady and this makes it only marginally useful. The image quality on the Canon PowerShot G12 is same as G11. The pictures look great in lowest ISO settings with excellent exposure and color. When you go beyond ISO 200, the details start degrading and pictures start getting overt and noisy at ISO 400 and above. The highest usable setting here is ISO 800. If you are really particular about quality, I won’t recommend you to go beyond ISO 200. Unlike LX5, you don’t get much advantage over JPEG’s if you process the images on Canon PowerShot G12 as raw files. The colors and artifacts are different and you might get little  [...]

LG X120 – Matte body

thumbnail
LG X120 has very good looks. It is wrapped in white matte finish and it is a relief to see that it doesn’t attract a lot of fingerprints. I also liked the green accent around the Netbook’s rounded edges; it is tasteful and nice and doesn’t beg for a lot of attention. LG has opted for a glossy standard plastic on inside and it does not really look bad in person but the quality is not the same as that on the exterior. LG X120 has sturdy feel and will fit in nicely in your gadget bag. It is not as light and thin as other competitors in the market and the chassis has been made a bit bigger in order to accommodate the six cell battery. This is not a big deal and I think that most users will be happy to accept the bigger battery life for a bigger chassis. When it comes to  [...]

Dell Inspiron 17 Review – Excels in performance

thumbnail
Dell Inspiron 17 laptop has a list price of $799.98 and this is average for 17 inch laptops. After reviewing it, I observed that the performance is above average as compared to desktop replacement laptops. The feature set here is standard as for desktop replacement systems but the performance is much better and this makes the Dell Inspiron 17 stand out from the competition. Dell Inspiron 17 review says that this machine is the bigger sibling to the Inspiron 15R series which is 15.6 inches big. Both these laptops have the same metallic and glossy lid which attracts a lot of fingerprints. The silver and glossy deck of the keyboard resists a lot of smudges. When the lid is closed, the chassis looks really appealing. There is a tapering front edge from the top to the bottom and the back of this notebook is one third past the hinge. This design lets you bend the screen back in constrained seating conditions. The keyboard is traditional and there is an included  [...]

Lenovo IdeaPad U350 – For frequent travelers

thumbnail
The name ThinkPad is now synonymous with high end business laptops but this company has been struggling to make a good impact in consumer market. Lenovo IdeaPad U350 is the big departure from the ThinkPad line up and it is the first product from this company in the Ultra-Low Voltage platform. This product certainly has everything that you’d in a travel companion. The weight is just 1.64 kgs which is good for a laptop and there is no optical drive which makes the chassis really thin at just 25mm. Lenovo IdeaPad U350 isn’t really attractive looking and this might turn off fashion enthusiasts. The lid has a textured brown, odd check and the keyboard is surrounded by silvery gold material that is supposed to look like brushed metal. The bezel of the screen is glossy black. It is not a disaster but Lenovo could have done better here. The manufacturer  [...]
