Review Of Casio Exilim EX-FC100 Digital Camera

9.1 MP camera from Casio has many reasons that will make you like it. There are host of options and the quality is good too.

Sum and Substance:
Thumbs Up:

Plenty of features, good speed, Eye-fi connectivity.

Thumbs Down:

Photo quality could have been better, no optical zoom for video modes.

Inside the Trunk:
The Whiz Kid Speaks:

9.1 megapixel camera, optical sensor CMOS, Video Format – AVI, MJPEG, Video Capture 1280 x 720 , 640 x 480 , 480 x 360 , 224 x 168 , 224 x 64, Supported Flash Memory – MultiMediaCard , SD Memory Card, 5X Optical Zoom, Dimensions (WHD) 3.9 x 2.3 x 0.9 inches, Weight (with battery and media) 6.2 ounces.

Razzle Dazzle:

Casio Exilim EX-FC is a good camera but it doesn’t have anything that will make you drool. It looks like a regular camera and there is no attempt made to make it look pretty. This doesn’t mean that it is ugly but the camera is OK in the looks department. The back of the camera is neat with the LCD(which is great, by the way) screen taking up a third of the screen and rest is reserved for buttons. Plenty of space between the buttons ensures they are not cramped.

Inside Dope:

The exterior of the camera is all metal  and looks quite rugged. It will sit in your pocket comfortably, it is compact and slim.

Casio exilim review

The camera is 9.1 MP, the photos don’t look like they have been shot from a 9.1 MP rated camera. Photos could have been better. There are options on the camera which support high speed, but they consume extra battery and the resolution drops.

Casio Exilim EX-FC100  has 5X optical zoom and we were glad with it, but then we realized that this option was not available for video shooting. In the video mode there are three options high speed, normal or slow shooting. In the slow shooting mode the video is captured in slow motion and you can click a specific picture. For example, a person is running to catch a bus, you are capturing the video in slow motion. You can run the video later and then click the picture where the person gets on to the bus.

In the high speed mode, there are options for high speed anti shake and high speed night scene. The results of this mode are good and the blurring due to the shakes is removed. If you use this feature the resolution of the camera will drop from nine to six mega pixels which doesn’t exploit the full capabilities of the camera. You cannot use the optical zoom for video shooting either.

High speed shooting has three options – 210 fps, 420fps and 1,000 fps and you get resolutions of 480×360, 224×168, and 224×64, respectively. The camera has HD movie capture too, but it is not that impressive.

There is also Eye-Fi option on the camera which lets you transfer photos wirelessly onto a computer or a service like Webshots or Flickr. Transfering photos wirelessy is a not as fast as storing them onto a card of the camera. So it will make you wait if you want to use this feature.

Nitty Gritty:

Casio Exilim EX-FC100 is a good camera for all the qualities it offers. We would recommend this camera for occasional photographers who use it for holidays or special occasions. The eye-fi connectivity and the slow shooting modes are the features that make it a good photo capturing device. However the photo quality could have been better, they don’t do justice to the 9.1 MP rating.
