LaCie Starck Mobile is probably the coolest looking portable drive ever. With the aluminum cover it certainly looks attractive. But it is costlier than other drives with similar features on this market.

LaCie Starck Mobile is definitely an eye candy material. It is enclosed in a thick aluminum shell. Also it is a USB cord attached for data transfers.

When it comes to making external drives you have got to be carefull because there are tons of hard drives in the market already and you have to make one that offers something different to the users. And there are constantly new hard drives that come up in the market so it is essential to make up a product that will survive the competition. A external USB hard drive is a small part of the PC and hence there is stiff competition among the manufacturers to pull down the price so as to sell more. So lets see if this drive has it what matters.

La Cie’s Stark is damn cute! Yes, the drive is very attractive; it has a sheet of aluminum woven around it that give a sleek look. The aluminum is thick though and this adds to the weight of the drive. It reminds you of Apple’s iPod or the iMac computers where aluminum casing is used on the outside. The drive is bulky, weighs about 355 grams, so think twice if you are buying this one to carry data around.

La Cie has paid more attention to the looks of the product rather than the increasing its utility. No doubt, you get a good impression when you first see the drive and make you want to buy it but the weight is a turn off.

La Cie has a built in USB cable so you don’t have to carry a separate cable along with you. The cable goes back into the drive when it is not in use. The pc-end of the cable is big and hence obstructs other settings on the back of the computer.

Also, we would have appreciated a small stand along with this drive that would make it stand on the desk near the computer.

The drive comes along with a La Cie setup assistant that will help you set up the drive like partition, type of partition (NTFS,FAT32,HFS+) etc. Also included is a Genie Backup assistant that is known to create back ups and keep data safe.

The drive gives you two options 320 GB and 500 GB.

Nitty Gritty:

The LaCie Starck Mobile is a product that is great looks but nothing else about it is remarkable. If you are looking at external hard drive, we recommend more adept players like Transcend or Hitachi. You would sacrifice on the looks but save money.
