The Whiz Kid Speaks:
This cool looking Nikon Coolpix S70 has a 12 MP rating which drops to 8 MP if you are taking widescreen pictures, maximum resolution for pictures is 4,000X3,000 pixels and video is 640X480 at 30fps. It has a built in li-ion rechargeable battery. Nikon Coolpix S70 weighs in at 4.9 oz, is 3.8 inch wide, 0.8 inch deep and 2.4 inch tall. Plenty of ISO options make the user spoilt for choice. It has 4x digital zoom. All other features such as motion detection technology and smile detection technology, date and time stamp, red-eye reduction flash mode are all present onto this gadget.
Nikon Coolpix S70 is thin and light so it can easily fit in to your jeans without much effort. A neat 3.5 inch touch screen OLED screen takes up the entire back side of the camera. It looks great but it is challenging to hold the device when you clicking pictures, the finger is bound to come in front of the lens if you are not careful.
Nikon is a well known name in the camera industry and has been known to make good digi-cams. Nikon Coolpix S70 won’t disappoint you either.
The camera looks really cool. You have to slide down a thin metal lens cover and it reveals the lens inside. The back of the device has a big 3.5 inch, 288k dot resolution and it is all touch screen. Now this may be good for people who love touch screen technology but it adds to the cost of the camera. If you are crazy about touch screen and don’t mind shelling out a few more bucks for it then go for this one.
The touch screen big screen takes up the entire back panel and the lens are located at the top. So when you are clicking the photos you are bound to get a finger in between them and spoil your photos. So make sure you handle the camera right before clicking. We had some problems with this, the finger or the shadow of the finger showed in the pictures.
The touch screen is capable of quite a lot of things and can sometimes surprise you. In this camera you can tap on the screen and the video mode changes in to camera mode and vice versa. Multi touch is supported (like iPod) so you can pinch photos to zoom in and zoom out. You also use the swipe gesture to surf through the collection of the photos on the camera. There are no buttons on the camera (except for one, the shutter button) and touch screen buttons is all you have.
There is a host of options in shooting modes and among them the auto mode is the default one, in which you can avoid all the fuss of choosing and just select the mode recommended by the camera.
There is a built in li-ion rechargeable battery which does not dry out quickly and there is a bundled charger along with the camera.
There are 4 drive modes included – single shot, continuous, best shot selector and multishot 16. The is best shot selector fires 10 frames and then saves the best one among them while the multi shot 16 fires 16 shots and then puts them all that in a grid.
Among the negatives there is a little shutter lag and it takes time to wake up and click. But it is not that big issue you won’t be bothered by that much.
The picture quality of the Nikon Coolpix S70 is good and so is the video quality. There is a host of ISO options and you can pick the best one among them according to your needs while using. There is only digital zoom and no optical zoom which might disappoint you when you are shooting videos.
The camera also offers clicking in wide screen resolution but the pictures will be clicked in 8 MP resolution.
Nikon Coolpix S70 is a joy for camera enthusiasts it has all the features that you need.
The presence of the touch screen adds to the cost. Touch screens are used more on video-recorders but Nikon has decided to add this feature on Coolpix S70. A camera with all this features minus the touch screen will be cheaper but if you are crazy about touch screen and don’t mind spending more, go for this camera.
