THE WHIZ-KID SPEAKS: When handed over with the HP Officejet Pro 8500, my first reaction was ‘ well, that one looks pretty impressive’ and then looking at the price tag all I had to say was ‘ $280, now that’s asking for too much’ but sometime with it and trust me this one is worth all the moolah being paid for it.

This one surely has some meaty aesthetics at 19.45 inches wide by 18.86 inches deep and 13.03 inches tall. This huge bulk can be hugely attributed to the features that it brings along with it which include an autoduplexer, 50-sheet automatic document feeder, and legal-size scanner bay.

Coming to the looks of this one… it’s got a glossy black cockpit which blends in really well with the matte white and gray panels. Right in the centre is the 3.45 inch LCD toouchscreen display. Well many may argue that the ones by competitors like Brother have larger display but with this one HP proves that bigger isn’t always better. The display of this one though smaller is comparatively more precise and the manufacturers have taken care to see that the screen is not cluttered with unnecessary options.

Apart from the screen on the front panel there’s the telephone keypad for typing in fax numbers typing in fax numbers, a collection of quick access fax and copy buttons, a “Digital Filing Networking Folder” button that lets you scan and manage your images over a network, and an “E-mail” button. The bottom of the front panel houses the an external card reader which provides support for Compact Flash,PictBridge USB, xD, Memory Stick and SD.

The Pro 8500 can be paired with the host computer in precisely three ways : through the built in Ethernet port, a direct connection through the USB port, and through 802.11 b/g networking. It hardly took like 8 minutes to pair it with the host computer. More often than not, setting up a wireless network is a highly daunting process, but with the onscreen instructions of the 8500 setting it up was a piece of cake.

It has got a 250 sheet input feeder tray and the top comes off when its time to refill it. The tray can be easily extended to accommodate A4 and legal size paper. The tray is pretty much impressive made up of sturdy plastic and it also doesn’t come out of the printer.

Also for those who want to print huge amounts of paper, this one offer an extra 250 sheet input tray just for $80. At the top of the printer we have a 50 sheet document feeder for scanning and copying. This one could easily churn out an average of 15,000 pages per month which is quite sufficient enough for any small to medium sized business.

This one comes equipped with the Photosmart Essential, with the use of which the user can easily import, organize and share digital photos. It’s also got the Solution Center software which helps you fax and scan documents and also order additional supplies to work with the printer.

The scanner of this one has an Optical Character Recognition using which the graphics can be interpreted into text. Also there is an option where the user can convert graphics to text or just save as editable text. It’s a good addition to it but then it doesn’t really perform the functions really well. And at times the scanner changed the letters into a really funny font which almost resembled the wingdings font.

This one could easily churn out around 11.5 pages per minute which is just fabulous. The performance of this one by HP is highly commendable and could easily put most of its competitors to shame. Also in the photo speed test this one scored a highly impressive 1.39 pages per minute.

The device also didn’t fail to impress when it came to the quality of the output. Absolutely brilliant colour quality. Not that many offices will actually look into much detail into the colour quality, but still it’s nice to know that this all-in-one is almost a winner in most of the aspects.

Nitty- gritty: This one for sure is one of the best all-in-ones on the shelf at the moment. With its brilliant performance it surely stands out amidst the huge array of all-in-ones. This spark plug is definitely worth all the talk and the moolah.
